Andy Chamra passed away in Cornelius, NC, at the age of 77. He was the second born of four to his parents Andy Sr. and Ethel Chamra and grew up in Carteret, NJ. Andy graduated from Carteret High School and obtained degrees from Saint Francis University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. While also spending six years in the US Army Reserves, Andy dedicated 40 years to the youth of Carteret through his roles as a Math and Computer teacher and the Chair of the Math/Science/Computer department at Carteret High School and then as the Vice Principal of Nathan Hale Elementary School. Following his retirement, Andy and Phyllis, his wife of 55 years, moved to North Carolina to be closer to their son, Tony. Andy enjoyed playing softball and golf.
From teaching his little brother how to play baseball to the first time he stood in front of a high school classroom to running through multiplication flashcards with his granddaughter a week before his passing, Andy was constantly teaching. He coached numerous baseball and softball teams, always stressing the fundamentals of the sport and sportsmanship. Andy led by example and showed his love through his actions. Providing and caring for his family was a priority in his life. Andy put others first, and was always lovingly present and involved. Andy was not a big talker, but he was impactful, always making his words count, and he touched many lives through meaningful and sincere mentoring and conversation.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tom Chamra. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Chamra; son Tony Chamra and his wife Becca Elliott; granddaughter Katelyn Chamra; Barbara Chamra (wife of deceased brother Tom), sister Evelyn Denihan (Dave Denihan), brother Bob Chamra (Lena Chamra); and nieces and nephews Casey, Christina, Gerard, Heather, Holly, Lynn, and Robert.
