Life History
Growing up and Schools 1933-1966
Antonius, or Ton as he was known, was the eldest son of healthy, caring, competent parents, with four younger siblings. His father was a civil designer, draftsman, and inspector. Ton had a boys-only Catholic education and was an Altar boy; he lived by the Ten Commandments. During his elementary school years, Ton and family persevered during the WWII occupation of the Netherlands. After the war, he served in the Dutch military, and attended the Technical School in Amsterdam, as well as the Technological University of Delft at age 26. Ton ultimately achieved a Doctorate-level degree in Chemical Engineering at the age of 33.
Family and Work 1963-2000
Ton married Johanna, or Ans as she is called, in 1963, and moved to the USA in 1966. During these busy years, Ton's focus was on developing his career as well as raising their five sons and one daughter at home with Ans. Ton’s profession was as a chemical engineer in membrane separations and water desalting. Ton loved design, research and development, and brought his expertise to conferences and job sites across Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Cape Verde. Over the years, the Ammerlaan family lived in Wisconsin, New Jersey, Massachusetts and then Yuma, Arizona where he spent the last 15 years of his career at the largest desalination plant in the US. Ton was proud to have authored eight technical publications as a specialized expert in his field. Ton became a US Citizen in 1993, but always remained close to his Dutch heritage.
Senior and Independent 2000-2025
After his retirement in 2000, Ton and Ans moved to Florida and were blessed with good health and the addition of sixteen grandchildren! In 2012 they made their final move to North Carolina to be close to family. They especially enjoyed AmmFam reunions every few years that included all 30 Ammerlaans. He lived by the Six Rules: RESPECT, CARE, and LOVE -- EXPLORE, PLAN and BUILD. After 20+ years, he proudly completed the Ammerlaan genealogy, a significant accomplishment. Ton loved exploring the desert and beyond in his SUV. He studied cosmology, anthropology, genealogy, digital imaging, and bird songs. Special interests included flowers, trees, and music.
