Barbara "Sue" Gray

March 6, 1944 — October 12, 2021

Mrs. Barbara Sue York Gray, 77, passed away peacefully on October 12 at Preston House Memory Care in Charlotte, NC.

Sue, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend was born on March 6, 1944. She spent her early years growing up in both Yadkenville, NC and Hilton Head, SC. Sue was a graduate of Yadkinville High School where she was a cheerleader and named Miss Yadkinville High during her senior year. Sue graduated from Appalachian State University in 1965 with a BS degree in Elementary Education and later earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and Principal’s Certification from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Sue touched many people during her work in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System over her 34 year career as first a classroom teacher and then administrator. Her classroom experience included teaching at the following elementary schools in Charlotte: Statesville Road, Barringer, Midwood and Chantilly. Sue then held the position of Assistant Principal at Chantilly and Albemarle Road Elementary and completed her career by serving as the first Assistant Principal of Blythe Elementary in Huntersville, NC.

Sue is survived by her husband of 56 years Bennett Gray, her daughter Angie Gray Lambert and husband Kevin Lambert along with her grandson Chris Lambert and her granddaughter Kelsey Lambert. Sue lived a beautiful life full of love and enjoyed watching the birds at her backyard feeder, reading books, planting flowers, spending time with family and friends and everything the color pink. She will be missed by many but her legacy will live on in those she loved and that loved her.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sue’s Preston House caregivers Tammy, Julie and Alma who nicknamed her “Super Model Sue”  as well as the many other caregivers that we did not have the opportunity to meet. The family would also like to send a world of thanks to Sue’s Hospice team from Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, NC. In particular, the family would like to acknowledge their gratitude to Sue’s Hospice nurse, Eileen, who was with us since March 2020, guided us through the year of COVID and provided us much appreciated guidance during Sue’s disease progression. The family would also like to thank Champlain Johnathan of Sue’s Hospice team for his many phone calls and prayers that brought much comfort over the last couple of years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice Palliative Care Charlotte Region at 7845 Little Ave. Charlotte, NC 28226 or to the families Facebook Alzheimer's fundraiser  https://www.facebook.com/donate/223273083201097/?fundraiser_source=external_url.

The family is planning a private celebration of Sue’s life. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home is assisting the family.
