Donald Leroy Pope, a cherished member of the Charlotte community, passed away on August 10, 2024, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 16, 1943, to Hazel and Ruby Pope, Don was raised in Charlotte and proudly graduated as a member of the first class at Garringer High School in 1962.
Don began his career at Highland Park Mill, where he worked as a Loomfixer. This historic site, now Heist Brewery in Noda, was the starting point of a long and dedicated work life. In 1967, Don joined the City of Charlotte, where he would spend the next 37 years in the Street Maintenance department, eventually becoming a Crew Chief. His commitment to his work and the city was unwavering, and he retired in 2004 after a distinguished career.
During his years with the City of Charlotte, Don also worked part-time at 7-Eleven in South Park from 1967 to 1988, and later with Estes from 1999 to 2004. He was known for his work ethic and attention to detail. Upon his retirement, he was fondly remembered by his supervisor who said, "Speed may not quite be the essence but quality is," a sentiment that defined both his professional and personal life.
Don's legacy is one of hard work, dedication, and a deep love for his family and community. He will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor, and his unwavering commitment to doing things the right way.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Tammy Pope; daughters, Donette (Rick) Thornburg, Tonia Lacy, Christy (Joshua) Bush; son, Donald J (Laura) Pope; grandchildren, Heather (Travis) Phillips, Caroline Lynch, Kelsey Lynch, Aaron Lacy, Kirsten Bush, Daniel Bush, and Brooks Pope; great-grandchildren, Bryce Phillips, Skylar Phillips, Adalynn Phillips, and Mae Lacy; sisters, Judy (Jim) Powers and Susie (Garland) Hobbs; and many loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
