Doris Moore Maxwell

Doris Jane Moore Maxwell, of Huntersville, NC passed away on Friday, December 4 in her home at The Pines at Davidson.

Doris was born June 23, 1927 to the late Thomas Frank and Jane Christenbury Moore on their farm on Eastfield Road outside Huntersville. She was a graduate of Croft Elementary School, Huntersville High School, and Queens College. A devoted teacher, Doris taught English, American literature and journalism at Stony Point and North Mecklenburg High School, where she was known as Mama Maxwell to a generation of students. Doris served as an elder and committed member of Huntersville Presbyterian Church, and was active in the Alpha Sigma chapter of the Alpha Gamma Delta teachers sorority. She loved the great outdoors, the family dogs, European travel, vacations at the beach, new destinations, and gatherings with friends and family. Her sweet nature, beautiful smile and ready laugh were a joy to all who knew her.

A wonderful and beloved wife and mother, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Kimble Maxwell. She is survived by family members Tom, Tessa and Ian Maxwell of Charlotte; Catherine Maxwell and Ben Fewel of Raleigh; John, Sandra, Oliver and Edison Maxwell of Charlotte; and Gail, Margaret, Dan and David Moore and their children of Charlotte and Huntersville.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, December 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Raymer Funeral Home, 16901 Old Statesville Rd. in Huntersville, NC. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m.Saturday December 11, 2010 at Huntersville Presbyterian Church at 201 South Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, NC.
