Edda Hergert Shaffer

January 28, 1941 — December 5, 2023

Denver

Our mother Edda Shaffer passed away on December 5, 2023. Edda was born on January 28, 1941 in Pirmasens, Germany. Edda grew up in Pirmasens, the daughter of Heinrich and Karoline Hergert.  Her father was a well-known international professional soccer player who played for Pirmasens(1925-1938) and Kaiserslautern(1938-1939). Her mother was a homemaker/shopkeeper raising three children, Edda Shaffer, Karin Taiclet and Rolf Hergert.  Our mother spent most of her life raising five daughters: Debbie Luat, Carol Moore, Patty Luat, Nicole Miller and Corinna Luat-Jackson. She was proud to have raised her daughters to be strong and resilient individuals. And most of all she wanted her daughters to take care of one another.

Edda loved to travel having lived in Germany, France, Washington, Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina.  When the girls were young Edda loved to take vacations in our family travel trailer.  We found it humorous when she would always tell tall tales about our adventures and the size of the trailer.

Edda had more than a few notable hobbies. Anyone who knew Edda knew she loved to cook authentic German dishes and had a talent for baking extraordinary baked goods. In her younger years, Edda loved to sew clothes for her girls. Her motto was to buy fabric by the bolt, so we all wore matching outfits! Edda was an expert with a crochet needle. Over the years Edda crocheted and gifted an enormous amount of baby blankets and hats for family, friends, acquaintances, and those less fortunate.

Edda loved to see her family at get-togethers where she would reminisce about her many camping and cruising adventures. No party would be the same without an in-depth discussion about the meal and beer. Edda also loved tobrag about her kids, grand kids, great grand kids and life in general. One of her favorite things to do would be pulling out the photo albums at a party.

Edda is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Colleen Denise Luat, and brother Rolf Hergert. She leaves behind five daughters: Deborah Luat, Carol Moore, Patty Luat, Nicole Miller (wife Dawn Frickel) and Corinna Luat-Jackson (husband Arnie Jackson), her sister Karin (husband Tom Taiclet, nephews, Frank and Pat Taiclet).  Grandsons: Michael Hagerman, Pat Hagerman, Chace and Kyle Miller, Jordan DelDotto and granddaughter Jaime DelDotto.Great granddaughter, Nova Lynn DelDotto and great grandsons Michael and Elijah Hagerman.

Though Edda has left us, she made sure that our family bond is strong and that we continue to love and take care of each other. We will think of you often, especially when we check the mailbox. We miss and love you, Oma Edda.

Services for Edda will be private for immediate family members only. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital or Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region.
