Harold Calvin Sellers

May 23, 1925 — June 26, 2021

Harold “Hal” Sellers, 96, died peacefully on June 26, 2021 in his room at The Pines at Davidson, North Carolina.

Hal was born on May 23, 1925 in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania.  He was the son of James and Margaret Sellers and the younger brother of James Leroy Sellers.  He thoroughly enjoyed growing up in the Pittsburgh suburb where he and his friends “shared many happy hours inventing, building, and finding out what worked, and what didn’t.”  Hal graduated from Aspinwall High School in 1943 then headed for Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston as part of the Navy’s V-12 program.  His studies were interrupted by service in the Navy as he was involved in sonar surveillance in WWII along the Atlantic seaboard, and later he finished his engineering degree at University of Pittsburgh.

In 1950 Hal started what he considered “the best part of my life” when he married Margaret “Mardy” Edgar at Heinz Chapel in Pittsburgh.  They built a life together, moved their growing family wherever his career took them, and made long-standing friendships in the communities where they lived.  Hal loved to play piano, bridge, golf, bocce, and singing with Mardy in church choirs.  He was also a talented artist, and he produced beautiful paintings his family and friends will cherish for years.

Hal had a 32-year career with ALCOA where he was instrumental in the company’s information technology advancements.  Afterwards, he taught computer science at Clemson University for eleven years, and then spent several years assisting architects in computer-aided designs.

Hal was a devoted and proud father of four children: Susan (Thomas) Maddox, Barbara (Eric) Ellsworth, Andrew (Anne) Sellers, and Robert (Patricia) Sellers.  He took special delight in his grandchildren who include Bryan Maddox, Elizabeth Harte, Allison Slabaugh, Patricia McNally, Susan Brennen, Jane Sellers, Mary Sellers, Benjamin Sellers, Noah Sellers, Kenneth Sellers, and Reilly Sellers.  He was also thrilled by ten great grandchildren who are Olivia and Caroline Harte; Madison, Tyler, and Charlotte Slabaugh, Alexis Hunt and Hudson McNally, and Jacob, Miller, and Molly Brennen.  His wife, Mardy, passed away in 2011 just months after they moved to The Pines of Davidson.  In 2013 Hal dated and was committed to Tressie Wells who survives him.

A private memorial service will be held at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver, NC.  Memorial donations may be made to Unity Presbyterian Church, 8210 Unity Church Rd., Denver, NC, 28037 or East Lincoln Christian Ministries, 4278 Catawba Burris Road, Denver, NC, 28037.
