Helen “Lois” Hughes, age 87, of Huntersville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in the hospital on October 12, 2025. Born in Camden, New Jersey to Walter and Helen Cassel, Lois lived a life full of love, creativity, and devotion to her family.
Lois—Mom to us—shared 46 beautiful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Fritz Hughes. Dad passed away in 2004, and now, they are reunited once more. Together, they raised four wonderful children: Peggy Tosner (married to Doug), Michelle Thompkins (married to Shawn), Dawn Walling (married to John), and Eric Hughes (married to Rose). Their love and guidance shaped a family that continues to grow and thrive.
Mom’s love extended far beyond her role as a wife and mother. She was a proud grandmother, great-grandmother, and most recently, a great-great-grandmother. She was also a cherished mother-in-law, aunt, sister-in-law, and a dear friend to many we’ve always considered part of our extended family.
Her legacy shines brightest in the way she made holidays magical—infusing every gathering with warmth, joy, and her signature handmade crafts. Mom had a special gift for painting, and every piece she created was made with love and thoughtfulness. Her creations weren’t just gifts—they were treasures, each one a reflection of her heart.
Mom was also a passionate Philadelphia Eagles fan, cheering them on with unwavering spirit and pride. Her enthusiasm was infectious and brought us all together in laughter and camaraderie.
Moms are truly special, and ours was no exception. Her love, strength, and creativity will live on in our memories, in our traditions, and in the hearts of everyone she touched. Though we miss her deeply, we carry her with us always—in every holiday, every handmade keepsake, and every moment of love shared.
We invite you to join us in honoring Lois’s memory with a graveside service on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Arlington Park Cemetery (1620 Cove Road, Pennsauken, NJ 08110).
Immediately following the service, we’ll gather for a Celebration of Life at The Pub (7600 Kaighns Avenue, Pennsauken, NJ 08109) to share stories, laughter, and love in remembrance of Lois.
