Herman Lemuel Bullard

February 29, 1940 — November 21, 2025

Charlotte

Herman Lemuel Bullard, 85, transitioned from this life on November 21, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was born on February 29, 1940, in Bladen County, NC.

Mr. Bullard faithfully served our country in the United States Army for 32 years. He was a Master Rated Aviator, having served three tours in Vietnam. Herman earned The Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with V Device and a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, a Meritorious Service Medal, and 62 Air Medals among various other service awards. After retiring from the Army, Herman continued to serve our country as a flight instructor at Ft. Rucker in Enterprise, Alabama before working as a pilot in both the private and commercial sectors.

Once retired permanently, he served as a board member for Welcome Home Veterans Military Museum at Richard’s Coffee Shop, which is a safe space for veterans of all generations to come together in community and to support one another. His sense of duty could only be matched by his humor and his love for his family.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Martha McCorkle Bullard, son James Clayton Warren, grandson Kyle Devon Lennon Bullard, thirteen brothers, and one sister. He is survived by four children, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Herman was loved by many and will be missed by all. In life, he was known as many things — a son, brother, soldier, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend — but most knew him as “Papa.”

Herman was a strong supporter of Welcome Home Veterans, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Shriners Hospital for Children. In lieu of flowers, donations to any of these organizations would be greatly appreciated.
