John William Phuntek

John William Phuntek “PapPap”, 85, of Denver, NC went home to be with the Lord on September 23, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born September 12, 1940, in Connellsville, PA John was the middle of three children to the late Arthur and Katherine Phuntek. 

Upon graduating from Connellsville High School John served two years in the United States Army. In 1965 John married Norma Jean and they moved to Syracuse, NY where they devoted their lives to raising their five sons.

John retired from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2005 where he worked for thirteen years as a receiving clerk. Upon retiring, John and Norma relocated to Denver, NC to be closer to their children. Even in retirement, John continued to stay active working part-time for Hertz Car Rental Company until just a couple years prior to his passing.

Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; brother, Arthur Lee Phuntek; and sister, Lois Jean Marietta. John is survived by his five sons: Brian Phuntek and wife Cindy of Iron Station, NC; Timothy Phuntek and wife Ann of Lincolnton, NC; William Phuntek and wife Kathleen of Stanley, NC; Christopher Phuntek and wife Michelle of Fort Mill, SC; John Phuntek and wife Amanda of Denver, NC; thirteen grandchildren: Andrew, Jeremy, Brandon, Maggie, Haylee, Carson, Emilee, Addison, Matthew, Caden, Amelia, Owen, Nora, and six great-grandchildren.

John was a devoted follower of the Lord, reading his bible daily. He also enjoyed fishing, baseball, and spending time with family. How John lived his life everyday was a true testament to strong faith, hard work ethic, and dedication.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:45 am at Denver United Methodist Church, 3910 Business Hwy 16 North, Denver, NC 28037. A celebration of life service will begin at 11 am.
