Maria da Luz Amaral

Maria da Luz Amaral, 81, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Maria’s life took her many places — including Mineola, New York; St. Augustine, Florida; and finally Cornelius, North Carolina.

She was reunited in peace with her beloved husband, Antonio Lopes Amaral.

Maria was the proud mother of Ana Rosa Burke and Lisa Marie Zelasko, and a loving grandmother to Luxe Amaral Zelasko and Liv Amaral Zelasko. She is also fondly remembered by her sons-in-law, Steven Michael Zelasko and Brian Paul Burke.

A professional seamstress by trade, Maria loved creating things with her hands. She loved cooking, enjoyed making crafts and thoughtful little gifts for the people she cared about, loved to dance, and cherished her pets, who brought her endless joy. Her home was often filled with the sounds of Fado music, keeping her heart close to her Portuguese roots.

Maria will be remembered for her humor, her warmth, and her deep love of family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local animal shelter in Maria’s memory.
