Concord, NC

Melvin H. Barnhardt, affectionately known as Pee Wee, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 85 in Concord, North Carolina. Born on June 19, 1940, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Melvin was the son of the late William Haynie Barnhardt (Willie) and Edna A. Christenbury Barnhardt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Barnhardt.

Melvin proudly served as a National Guard Veteran, displaying commitment and dedication to his country. Throughout his life, he embraced various passions, with a particular love for water and the great outdoors. He enjoyed riding on the lake both day and night, imparting his knowledge of safely navigating the waters to those around him. Melvin was known for his fun spirit, frequently teaching others how to ski or knee board and occasionally showcasing his own skills in trick skiing.

In his professional life, Melvin owned two auto parts stores, one in Harrisburg and the other in Statesville, North Carolina. His extensive career in the automobile and parts industry was a testament to his hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. Alongside his business, he cherished watching sports, including football, basketball, and NASCAR.

Melvin had a zest for life that was evident in his hobbies. He liked playing golf and was known for his impressive shag dancing. Music was a significant part of his life, especially his love for beach music, which he often enjoyed while listening to 94.9 The Surf on his Bluetooth radio at home. He valued his community and neighbors, often expressing gratitude for their support, particularly when they helped with tasks like mowing his lawn.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Diane Barnhardt, his daughter, Sandie B. Rumfelt, and her husband, Benny Rumfelt, along with Benny’s son, Derek Rumfelt. Melvin's family also includes his brother-in-law, Bobby Perry, as well as nieces and nephew JoAnn, Kim, and Eddie, all of whom hold cherished memories of him.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Melvin's life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Huntersville, North Carolina.

I believe in my heart that Pee Wee co-wrote the words with Frank Sinatra to the song "I did it my way". He lived life his way and his favorite words were "make it large". Pee Wee and I loved the beach, cruising the lake in "Big Orange". Mountain boy too. We love our country home in the words, blazing fire in the winter. We went crazy for snow. We rescued every stray creature we could find. Fed the deer, wild turkeys, turtles, you name it. He was the grill master! Loved cooking for family and friends, the more the better. For those of you who truly know the boy then your last memory of him will be without a shirt on and ragged gym shirts. Color him happy! I love you Pee Wee, what was then will still be.

Rest in peace, Daddy. I Love you!!
