Penny Lynn Heupel passed away peacefully on September 22, 2026. She was born on January 15, 1957 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Jacob and Marlene Heupel. From her birth to 1965, she was raised in Westport, South Dakota when the family moved to California, ultimately settling in Manteca. Penny lived the majority of her adult life in Stockton, California; with the exception of the time she lived abroad setting up a new warehouse facility in Seoul, Korea for the Department of Defense. She spent her career working for the DoD as a transportation clerk at the Sharpe Army Depot until her retirement in 2012.
Throughout her life, Penny found joy in the many positions she has held for foundations and charities, such as the NDTA serving as treasurer, CFC as loan executive, Relay 4 Life holding a number of positions; none that she enjoyed more than as her own team captain for “Penny’s Count.” She was also an active volunteer and supporter of her brother Loel’s charity, Better Life Foundation. She was especially known for her giving heart, helpful nature, but most of all, her straightforward opinions and sarcastic attitude. She was simply one of a kind.
Above all, Penny treasured her family. She loved them deeply and created countless memories through family traditions and visits to Texas, Ohio and North Carolina before she eventually moved to Huntersville in October 2023.
Those that knew Penny will remember her for her willingness to laugh, ability to stir the proverbial pot, and that she was always ready for an adventure; especially if it involved a stop at Buc-ee’s along the way.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Marlene Heupel. She is survived by her siblings Vickie Horn, Jim Heupel (Janet), and Loel Heupel (Nicki), her nieces and nephews Bryan Horn (Emily), Erin Gorham (Mike), Jaime Cordero (Chad), Trevor Horn (Jenny), Casey Honeywell (Craig), Dana Fitschen (Erich), Rachel Valenti (Anthony), Devan Heupel, and Matthew Heupel (Megan), and her 20 great nieces and nephews.
A private burial will take place at East Union Cemetery in Manteca, California where she will join her parents in final rest. There will be no formal funeral service. In keeping with her wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of life event in Huntersville, North Carolina and Manteca, California to honor and remember her.
