Preston Pugh, 79, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, surrounded by family and caretakers who loved him immensely.
Born in Lynchburg, VA, Preston grew up there with his parents, sister and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins. He lived his adult life in Richmond, VA, as a husband, girl dad, retired Marine reservist, IT developer, amateur car mechanic, and a garage guitar player. He lived his final years in Charlotte, NC to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren. He was happiest when holding a baby or watching his grandchildren play.
Preston will be remembered for his love of bluegrass music, Christmas decorations and making people smile with his wild sense of humor. His favorite event of the year was inviting his whole neighborhood to the Grand Illumination of his home in Glen Allen and making sure every child had the chance to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.
Preston is survived by his wife of 42 years Margie Pugh, his daughters Amy Howard (Wendell) and Laura Stockert (Jason), and his sister Pat Ellett. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren – Caroline, Kirsten, Taylor, Keri, Morgan, Alex, Avery, John, James, and Vance – and 11 great-grandchildren – Layla, Hawkins, Nora, Andee, James, Clayton, Dawson, Cash, Nola, Bennett, and Eli.
He was preceded in death by his parents Allie and Gladys Pugh and daughter Mary Catherine Pugh.
Preston’s family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Preston House and Gracious Living in Charlotte, NC, for taking great care of him, especially Julie who became his best friend and loved on him until the very end. Memory care caregivers are truly God’s gift to families.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church (Richmond, VA) at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 4 with a reception to follow.
