Ruth Boyce

June 30, 1927 — January 21, 2018

Ruth Irene Sellers Boyce, 90, of Davidson, NC, died on January 21, 2018 at the Pines at Davidson. Ruth was born on June 30, 1927 in Charlotte, NC to the late Charles Grier and Irene Sellers.

Ruth graduated from Women’s College of North Carolina in 1949 with a degree in elementary education. She married her junior high school sweetheart, the Reverend William Moore Boyce, Jr. in 1950 and began a shared ministry with him in Presbyterian churches in North Carolina and Virginia. She was an elementary and preschool teacher, a faithful servant of the Presbyterian Church, and a loving mother.  She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Presbyterian Women for her devoted service to the church.  Her role as a creative and caring grandmother was one of her greatest gifts to her family.  Her interests included all types of needlecraft, sewing, and playing the piano—each shared generously with family and friends. She was fond of a well-made bed, a shopping list, and a meal served to her family with style. She modeled a life of service to others until the very end.

Along with her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, brother Edward Sellers,brother-in-law Bedford Boyce, and sisters-in-law, Nancy Boyce and Margaret Boyce.

She is survived by her sons David (Elizabeth) and Richard (Kathleen) and daughter, Barbara Boyce Whitesides (Edward); eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brothers, Charles Sellers, Jr. and Dr. Phillip Sellers; brothers-in-law, Robert Boyce and James Boyce and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Merchant, Alice Boyce, and Julia Sellers.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Pines of Davidson for the loving care given to their mother.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 3:00pm at Davidson College Presbyterian Church (100 Main Street) in Davidson, NC with a reception to follow in the Jetton Fellowship Hall.
