Tony Lee Darnell, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, was born on August 21, 1945, in Gastonia, North Carolina. He passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina. Tony's life was characterized by his wittiness, strong will and fearless spirit, which he brought into both his personal and professional endeavors.
Tony grew up around Lincolnton, NC and played football for Lincolnton High School under coach Von Ray Harris in the early 1960's. He also played with the great football player teammate Dennis Byrd. Educated at Wake Forest University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, Tony excelled at his career in the tire industry, with manufacturer and wholesale distributor roles. His natural leadership abilities, coupled with his dry humor, allowed him to stand out in his field. He started off as a salesman and ultimately achieved the distinction of being a district manager with Uniroyal. Tony's other career accomplishments include being a manager at Banner Tire in South Florida, a manager for Ben Milen Wholesale Tires in Atlanta, a Charlotte distribution manager at ITCO Tire, and the Vice President of Marketing and Procurement for American Tire Distributors (ATD).
Tony was a man of many interests. He found joy in watching old movies, especially western and comedies; and was an enthusiastic supporter of Wake Forest football and basketball. His fondness for the sounds of music filled his life with rhythm, reflecting his love for the culture of the 1960s. Tony was also a member of the Deacon Club for 52 years.
Family was of utmost importance to Tony. He leaves behind a legacy cherished by his son Patrick (Christin) Darnell and son Nick (Beth) Darnell, as well as two granddaughters and two grandsons who adored him. He is also survived by his sister, Nickie (Ronnie) Avery, and nephews Jody Avery and Jeff Avery. Tony's former wife, Alice-Marie Darnell, also remembers him fondly.
Tony joins in resting his beloved parents, Roy Lee Darnell and Annie Remona Edge Darnell, as well as his grandmother, Vera Edge.
Visitation will be held on April 26, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville, North Carolina. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM, celebrating the life and legacy of a remarkable man.
