It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vance Cornelius McGee, Jr., a devoted family man and retired naval commander who touched the lives of many during his distinguished career and beyond. Vance passed away peacefully on May 14, 2023 at the age of 92, surrounded by his loving family. 

Born on September 11, 1930 in Charlotte, NC, to the late Vance and Myrtle McGee, Vance exemplified strength, dedication, and love in every aspect of his life. He proudly served his country as a naval officer, rising through the ranks and commanding the respect of his fellow officers and subordinates. His commitment to duty and unwavering leadership skills earned him numerous accolades and commendations throughout his career.

However, beyond his military achievements, Vance held a deep and abiding love for his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Georgia Ruth with whom he shared 69 years of joy, love, and partnership. Together, they built a beautiful life and nurtured a family that was the center of his universe.

As a father, he was a pillar of strength and wisdom, always there to guide and support his surviving children, Melanie Dortschy (Bill Campoli), Karen Burr (Jim) and Vance Cornelius McGee III (Helen). He instilled in them the values of integrity, resilience, and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. He cherished every moment spent with his children, taking great pride in their accomplishments and being their unwavering source of encouragement.

Vance was also a grandfather to, Vance Cornelius McGee IV (Nikki), Micah Paul McGee (Jennifer), Alexander Peter Dortschy, Kristina Juliana Dortschy, Amanda Isabella Dortschy, Katherine Li Burr, Callie Georgia Ann McGee and Jared Vance McGee, who brought immeasurable joy and laughter into his later years. He eagerly shared his stories and experiences, imparting wisdom and nurturing their dreams. His grandchildren will forever carry his love and guidance in their hearts.

He was also survived by five great-grandchildren, Malachi James McGee, Whitley Claire McGee, Micah Abram McGee, Vance Cornelius McGee V “Mac”, and Samuel Miles McGee whom he loved dearly.  He also had two surviving brothers and many extended family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

 Vance will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, honor, and dedication will live on through the countless lives he touched. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory and strive to carry on his values and he wishes to all of his family “Fair winds and following seas”.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Vance will be held on Saturday May 27, 2023 at 10:00 am at Trinity UMC, 6230 Beatties Ford Rd, Charlotte, NC 28216.

 In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Trinity UMC in his honor.
