The Lord called William “Bill” Jeffrey Vogel home on April 12, 2025, just shy of his 82nd birthday. He passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in the comfort of his home in Cornelius, North Carolina.
Born and raised in Albany, New York, Bill was the son of Margaret (Porter) and Edward H. Vogel. A proud Marine, he joined the Corps in 1962, and upon returning home, began a new chapter—marrying Sandra Jean Taylor and starting a family in New York’s Capital District.
Bill was predeceased by his parents; his sister Patricia Seeley (late Leonard); and his brothers Richard (late Phyllis), Edward (Helen), Thomas (late Nancy), James (Sherry), and Robert (late Mary). He is survived by his former wife and close friend Sandra Vogel, and his children Kevin (Noelle), Julie Mulligan (Dan), and Jeffrey (Terriann).
Bill’s pride and joy were his grandchildren: Haley, Natalie, Joseph, Christopher, Benjamin, Jessica, Quinn, and Rylee—each of whom had their nickname lovingly bestowed by “Grandpa Bill”. He is also survived by his sisters Margaret Mulroy (late John), Joyce Martin (late Thomas), Jean Vogel, Carol McGlone (Gerald), and Sharyn; and his brothers John (Carolyn), David (Josephine), and Donald (Geri), along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were family in every sense of the word.
For most of his career, Bill worked as a craftsman and painting contractor—first with his brothers at Vogel Painting Contractors, and later as a sole proprietor. Bill was a man of many joys: an avid reader of history, a lover of the outdoors, gardening, and animals, and someone who never missed a chance to sing—especially his funny songs that made his grandchildren roll their eyes. One of his proudest moments was recording a duet with his granddaughter. A die-hard New York Giants fan, Bill also had a passion for Pop Warner football and golf—especially the annual Tanneberger Tournament he participated in with his brothers. He cherished his time in Westport, New York with his brother Ed’s family, and in his later years, settled happily in Cornelius, North Carolina to be near his children and grandchildren.
Never one to sit still, Bill would always be up, moving not long after arriving at a get-together and delivering one of his signature goodbyes. As he reunites with those who went before him, we imagine him pointing his finger and saying, as he always did, “See ya around like a marble.”
The Vogel family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury, North Carolina, for the exceptional care Bill received over the years.
A service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. Bill will be laid to rest at Mount Zion Cemetery on Smith Road in Cornelius, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Bill’s memory may make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization close to his heart.
